Barilla, Italy's Leading Pasta Maker, Names Robert Black General Manager of U.S. Operations.

  • Robert Black (rugby player), All Black in 1914.
  • Professor Robert Black , Professor Emeritus of Scots Law at the University of Edinburgh
 as general manager of Barilla America, Inc.

Mr. Black, 53, is a long-time food marketing executive who has worked at Frito-Lay, Mars and, most recently, at Pet, Inc., where, as group vice president, he managed their Progresso and Old El Paso Old El Paso is a brand applied to a range of Mexican-style foods, including dinner kits, tacos and tortillas, sauces, condiments, rice and refried beans.

Old El Paso products are marketed in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, the Republic of
 brands.

Barilla America, Inc. currently sells its imported pasta line in the Eastern and Midwestern markets and is expanding to new markets. Two weeks ago it was announced that Barilla America would take over marketing responsibility for Barilla Pasta Sauces. Barilla Sauces had been marketed since 1995 by the Campbell Soup Company Campbell Soup Company (NYSE: CPB) (also known as Campbell's) is a well-known American producer of canned soups and related products. Campbell's products are sold in 120 countries around the world. It is headquartered in Camden, New Jersey.  under a licensing agreement. With the addition of Barilla Pasta Sauce, the U.S. company has annual sales of approximately $75 million.

Last year, Mr. Edwin Artzt -- former chairman of the board for The Procter & Gamble Company -- joined Barilla Alimentare S.p.A. as executive director. Mr. Artzt has focused on upgrading the company's marketing function as well as aggressively building its U.S. business.

The 120 year-old Barilla Alimentare S.p.A. is the market leader in both pasta and pasta sauce in Italy and had 1995 sales of more than U.S. $2 billion. The company, which is based in Parma, Italy, does business in more than 60 countries worldwide.
