Since 1956, the detachment has played a pivotal role in deploying and redeploying U.S. European Com-mand units in support of contingency operations throughout the world.

A convoy of 12 UH-60A Black Hawk and 6 UH-64A Apache helicopters were delivered Jan. 20 to Barge Site X-Ray on the Rhine River.

Members of the 838th teamed up with personnel from U.S. Army Europe's Theater Movement Control Agency, the Lampertheim police, and 2nd Battalion, 502nd Aviation Regiment to do the mission.

Members of the aviation unit loaded the aircraft onto the roll-on, roll-off barge, Dynamica. Once loaded, the barge set sail for the Port of Antwerp The port of Antwerp is a capesize port in the heart of Europe. Antwerp is situated at the estuarium of the Scheldt. After the Dynamica arrived at the port, Soldiers and civilians from the 838th discharged the barge and loaded the helicopters onto the American Roll-On Roll-Off Carrier vessel Liberty. Once loaded, the Liberty departed for Charleston, S.C.

This mission illustrates how the Rhine River Detachment continues to be a significant asset of the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command and a vital transportation enabler within the European theater.

Located in the heart of the theater, the detachment offers the distinct advantage of having a direct link to the major commands in the U.S. European Command and being a visible SDDC SDDC Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (formerly Military Traffic Management Command)
