clearance to market the Memotherm(TM) Nitinol Stent for use in treating malignant biliary obstruction biliary obstruction Bile duct obstruction Clinical medicine A blockage of the bile ducts with accumulation of bile in the liver Etiology Stone, tumor, pancreas–tumors or pancreatitis, cholecystitis, bile duct cysts, trauma, bile duct stricture, enlarged lymph .

The Memotherm Stent is a self-expanding stent made of "shape memory" Nitinol, which gives it exceptional flexibility as well as radial strength. Its unique diamond design minimizes shortening of the stent upon deployment, unlike other expandable stents which may shorten by as much as 60% once deployed. The Memotherm Stent is delivered through a 7 Fr. catheter and shortens less than 5% at full expansion, making accurate placement easier to achieve.

"The Memotherm Nitinol Stent broadens Bard's U.S. offering in our oncological diagnosis and intervention product group," said chairman and chief executive officer, William H. Longfield. "Some 43,000 deaths in the U.S. per year are associated with cancer of the liver Noun 1. cancer of the liver - malignant neoplastic disease of the liver usually occurring as a metastasis from another cancer; symptoms include loss of appetite and weakness and bloating and jaundice and upper abdominal discomfort

, biliary passages and pancreas. Approximately 32,000 individuals will develop a biliary obstruction each year and many of these are appropriate candidates for the Memotherm Stent. Metallic biliary stents can provide valuable palliative relief of obstructive jaundice and offer a cost-effective alternative to plastic stents or open surgical intervention."

Variations of the Memotherm Nitinol Stent have been marketed in Europe since 1994. In addition to its use for the treatment of malignant biliary obstruction, the Memotherm Stent has been used in Europe for a variety of cardiovascular and urological applications.
