Barclays Bank Realizing Savings From Internal Redevelopment Program Utilizing Carreker-Antinori Software.

Carreker-Antinori, Inc. (Nasdaq:CANI), a leading provider of consulting and software solutions for the banking industry, is nearing completion of the installation of its Research and Adjustments system in U.K.-based Barclays Bank and the bank is realizing impressive improvements as part of its overall redevelopment program.

Just over two years ago, the executives at Barclays accepted the fact that their back office research and adjustments processes needed serious attention. "The amount of paper we were producing was unbelievable, and with it came missed deadlines and high costs because of the large number of staff we needed just to keep our heads above water," says Janet Russell, Clearing Services Director for Barclays Bank. "Despite all our efforts, we couldn't keep up with the workload. As a result, overtime increased and moral plummeted."

After an extensive review process, Carreker-Antinori and Global Concepts (an Atlanta-based consulting firm) were commissioned to provide British check clearing best practices with regard to day two research and adjustments activities. This change program's name became CARP - Clearing Accounts Redevelopment Programme.

By August 1998, all of Barclays' clearing volume was being sent through the Carreker-Antinori Research and Adjustments System. This was the final element of the CARP program from which results have been positive and numerous. Staff was reduced from 300 to 101 full time employees and training time was reduced by 80 percent. Employees' job satisfaction increased because they were no longer paper shifters, but problem solvers. The department is also realizing equipment and systems maintenance savings.

The best practices initiatives launched in tandem with Global Concepts drove success. According to Jay Mehaffey, senior vice president for Global Concepts, the best practices study included process and workflow organization, work unit and performance measurement, organizational structure and staffing mix and environment and culture research. In addition, the study also addressed technology and software deployment techniques and exploitation, risk management and write-off policies, internal management audit programs, and source analysis. The final best practices deliverable was the confirmation of which industry best practices addressed the opportunities sought by Barclays, as well as identifying which best practices were viable candidates for integration at the bank.

The Research and Adjustments Components

The Research and Adjustments System consists of two components. The All Items Research System locates item sequence numbers for lost or misplaced check items quickly and easily. This significantly reduces tracing and cash letter reconstruction time in the research area. The Adjustments System is a powerful, comprehensive client/server case management system that establishes a new standard for handling the adjustment process by enabling research and adjustment investigators to enter, research, track and resolve errors. Case Auto Load, Offset matching and Auto Research are major productivity features of this system that help dramatically lower FTE requirements.
