Most women dread turning 50 but iconic doll Barbie seems to be taking it all in her stride with not a wrinkle or grey hair in sight.

Barbie Millicent Roberts was first introduced to the world in 1959 at the New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 Toy Fair.

Named after her creator Ruth Handler's daughter Barbara, she's been something of a busy woman over the past 50 years.

The blonde has pursued more than 100 different careers, including astronaut, gymnast, flight attendant, Unicef ambassador, and Formula One driver.

And she's famously never married, preferring instead to keep on-off boyfriend Ken at arms length.

Such feminist credentials have not softened her detractors, however. She has long been criticised for representing an unobtainable ideal thanks to her hourglass proportions.

Nevertheless, she has many fans after entertaining generations of young girls and birthday parties are being held worldwide in her honour.

They include hip French boutique Colette where a "Barbie room" is being opened and Hamley's in London where models dressed as Barbie blew out candles on a customised birthday cake constructed from over 2,000 pink cupcakes.

A spokeswoman for the event said: "Hundreds of little girls dressed in Barbie outfits were waiting for her and they absolutely loved it.

"Barbie has been a fashion icon for decades and an inspiration to little girls across the world."
