Barbershop Convention Brings 10,000 to Anaheim; Dick Van Dyke Named Honorary Life Member; Santa Fe Springs Chorus Pursues Fourth World Championship.

They're barbershop singers, and this week, more than 10,000 of them will converge in Anaheim for the 61st annual competition of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, June 27 - July 4.

The wholesome, family-oriented activities of the barbershop convention are open to all. The week's activities open with Celebrate Youth on Tuesday. Combining the fun of an old-fashioned sing-along with the excitement of young barbershop quartets, the free event showcases the commitment to young singers that is the cornerstone of SPEBSQSA's service project, SingAmerica.

The International Quartet Contest opens in the Arrowhead Pond on Wednesday, with 43 quartets from the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The top 20 quartets return for the semifinals Thursday night, with the top 10 survivors battling it out in the Saturday night finals.

 Massed Sing will draw more than 7,000 singers together for a free concert on "Harmony Lane" (formerly called Convention Way) between the Hilton Anaheim Located in Anaheim, CA, adjacent to the Anaheim Convention Center and across the street from Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure the Hilton Anaheim is among the largest convention hotels on the West Coast of the United States. The Hotel features over 1576.  and Marriott hotels. Everyone is welcome to hear some great performances and share the fun of singing as a community.

 are featured in the World Harmony Jamboree at the Hilton Anaheim Ballroom at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. The world champion Revival quartet headlines the gala concert, along with men's choruses from Sweden, Australia and Canada, and the women's champions from Sweet Adelines International Sweet Adelines International is a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances.  and Harmony Inc.

 America Collegiate Barbershop Quartet Contest on Friday at 10 a.m. in the Hilton Anaheim. Twenty-four top collegiate quartets will vie for the title, captured last year by Prime Cut from Emory University Emory University (ĕm`ərē), near Atlanta, Ga.; coeducational; United Methodist; chartered as Emory College 1836, opened 1837 at Oxford. It became Emory Univ. in 1915 and in 1919 moved to Atlanta.  in Atlanta.

Music and Americana go hand in hand at Disneyland on Friday, as barbershop performers take various stages around the park for Disneyland's Barbershop Quartet Festival. The 130-man Alexandria Harmonizers Chorus, 1998 champions, perform at the Plaza Gardens Stage at 1:30 p.m., and strolling quartets will throng Main Street U.S.A. throughout the day.

The major public show of the week takes place Friday evening. SPEBSQSA's Association of International Champions will rock the Anaheim Convention Center Anaheim Convention Center is a major convention center in Anaheim, California. It is located across from the Disneyland Resort on Katella Avenue. Much of the Anaheim Convention Center has been renovated in recent years with state-of-the-art facilities.  Arena at 7:30 p.m. Twelve past champion quartets and the AIC AIC Association des Infermières Canadiennes.  Chorus are featured in the show. Tickets will be available at the door and in advance by calling 714/740-4547.

More than 1,200 men will take the stage Saturday for the International Chorus Contest. Santa Fe Springs' own Masters of Harmony The Masters of Harmony are a 135-member men's barbershop chorus, based in Santa Fe Springs, California. Founded in 1986 with a few dozen men, they rose to stardom under the tutelage of director Dr. Greg Lyne.  Chorus will try for its fourth world championship against competition from 22 other choruses from the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Sweden and Australia.

The International Quartet Contest finals conclude at 7 p.m. on Saturday, when the society's newest quartet champion is crowned. Dick Van Dyke will be honored as a life member of the society in a special ceremony during this event.

Van Dyke is a longtime fan of the style, stretching back to high school days, and recently appeared with a quartet on his CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  series "Diagnosis Murder."

A convention registration is required for admission to contest sessions. These may be purchased in advance by calling the barbershop convention at 714/740-4547, or during the convention at the ticket office in the Marriott.
