Bar says prices for its upscale drinks are easy to swallow.

Byline: RETAIL NOTEBOOK By Joe Mosley The Register-Guard

The owner of a new bar in downtown Eugene figures he's settled on a recession-proof concept: upscale drinks for pedestrian A pedestrian is a person travelling on foot, whether walking or running.  prices.

Patrick Leiser and a couple of silent partners opened Bar 201 just over a month ago in a 1,900-square-foot space at Broadway and Charnelton Street.

"It's been excellent," Leiser says. "Every day, I have new people coming through, which is encouraging to me. We have a lot of positive feedback, and a lot of return customers."

Bar 201 is in a space previously occupied by The Moxie, a combination hair salon/cocktail lounge that closed at the end of December after a 1'-year run. Its owners declared themselves casualties of the recession.

But Leiser says he is not concerned about pricing himself out of the market with drinks in the $7 to $9 range - which he says are a bargain considering their quality. Bartenders at the new business squeeze fresh lime, lemon, orange and grapefruit grapefruit, pomelo (pŏm`əlō), or pummelo (pum`məlō), citrus fruit (Citrus paradisi) of the family Rutaceae (orange family).  juices daily and produce their own tonic tonic, in music: see harmony; key; scale; tonality.  water and a variety of original and classic cocktails A Classic cocktail is defined here as a cocktail which appeared after the publication of Jerry Thomas' 1887 Bartender's Guide but before the end of Prohibition in the United States in 1934. .

"And the prices are less than a lot of other places in the area."

Bar 201 offers a limited food menu, with sandwiches, salads, a cheese plate and other snacks. It also books local jazz groups for free performances on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Leiser, who has business experience in south Florida, moved to Eugene about three years ago and was working in real estate before formulating his plans for the new nightclub.

"That was pretty challenging," he says. "Me and a couple silent investors just decided to make the move - a place where people could come out and enjoy a fun evening without spending a whole lot of money."

Leiser declines to discuss the amount of his investment in the new business, but says improvements to the storefront were not extensive.

Room to grow

Laura and Jason Groshong have opened a Springfield branch of their New2You furniture store after outgrowing their original location in Junction City Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley, .

The Groshongs offer some new furniture along with what they describe as high-quality, carefully selected used pieces.

"We definitely don't take anything that's junk junk

, and we don't take anything that comes from a home that smells like smoke," Laura Groshong says.

About three-quarters of the used inventory at the New2You stores is purchased from its previous owners, while the remainder - usually higher-end items - is shown on consignment The delivery of goods to a carrier to be shipped to a designated person for sale. A Bailment of goods for sale.

The Springfield store, which has a 2,700-square-foot showroom along with more than 6,000 square feet of warehouse space, is at 177 S. 14th St. - across 14th Street from the Grocery Outlet Grocery Outlet, first known as Canned Foods Grocery Outlet until 1992, is a privately owned supermarket chain. The storefront previously was occupied by the Rest Easy Mattress Co.

Groshong says she and her husband decided to open their second store after accumulating more inventory than they could use at their 2,100-square-foot location at West Sixth Avenue and Holly Street in Junction City. The Junction City store has been open for a year.

The couple had to rent storage space for their excess furniture before opening the Springfield store, Groshong says.

"We got into a pretty nice deal - that location was ready (for use as a furniture store)," she says. "For us, we had very little startup cost because we had so much inventory already.

"That was one of the reasons we chose to open another location - those (furniture items) were not making us any money, keeping them in storage."

Both family-operated New2You stores are open from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
