Sheldon F. Goldthwait, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Bar Harbor Bankshares and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Bar Harbor Banking and Trust Company, has announced his retirement as of April 11, 2000.

Mr. Goldthwait has served as President and Chief Executive Officer since January of 1995. He joined Bar Harbor Banking and Trust Company in 1971 as an Assistant Vice President. During Mr. Goldthwait's 29 years of service, he advanced to the positions of Vice President in 1977, Vice President and Treasurer in 1986, and Executive Vice President in 1989. Prior to his appointment as President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Goldthwait's responsibilities focused on the financial, operational, and lending functions of the Bank.

Mr. Goldthwait, a native of Bar Harbor, is a graduate of Bowdoin College Bowdoin College, at Brunswick, Maine; coeducational; chartered 1794, opened 1802, named for James Bowdoin. One of the nation's older colleges, its alumni include Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Franklin Pierce.  and the BAI n. 1. a language spoken in the Dali region of Yunnan.

Mr. Goldthwait's business affiliations have included the Maine Bankers Association (Past President, Director, and recipient of the Volunteer Banker of the Year Award), the Independent Community Bank Association of Maine, and Acadia Corporation (Treasurer).
