Bar Foundation awards $1.7m in IOLTA grants.


Some $1.7 million in grants have been awarded by the New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E).  Bar Foundation to 11 nonprofit organizations Nonprofit Organization

David G. Snyder, executive director of the foundation, said funding for the grants comes from the interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts A system in which lawyers place certain client deposits in interest-bearing accounts, with the interest then used to fund programs, such as legal service organizations who provide services to clients in need.  grants program, which he said is a "remarkable expression of goodwill among both the banking and legal communities."

More than 2,200 New Hampshire lawyers and 41 banks participate in the IOLTA IOLTA Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts  program.

 Snyder, "When safety, shelter, food and medicine are on the line, legal assistance is particularly critical. The nonprofit organizations funded by the New Hampshire Bar Foundation will help thousands of residents, disadvantaged by age, income or disability, access the legal assistance they need in the coming year."

The organizations receiving grants provide free or reduced-fee legal advice, legal representation, advocacy or referral in civil matters to help disadvantaged residents. Several of the organizations also offer law-related education pamphlets, Web sites and public seminars.

Receiving the grants were:

* Disabilities Rights Center, Concord, $34,454, to help support a staff attorney position.

* Franklin Pierce Civil Practice Clinic, Concord, $51,000, to support the clinic's task of providing direct representation of indigent indigent 1) n. a person so poor and needy that he/she cannot provide the necessities of life (food, clothing, decent shelter) for himself/herself. 2) n. one without sufficient income to afford a lawyer for defense in a criminal case.  clients in civil legal matters.

* International Institute of New Hampshire, Manchester, $25,000, to help support a staff attorney position.

* Law School Loan Forgiveness, Concord, $90,000, to provide law school loan repayment assistance for eligible staff attorneys working for nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

* Legal Advice & Referral Center, Concord, $60,000, to support a toll-free hot line for legal advice.

* New Hampshire Bar Association Reduced-Fee Referral Service, Concord, $36,000, to support a lawyer referral program connecting those with some "limited capacity to pay" for civil legal assistance with attorneys willing to work for a reduced-fee.

* New Hampshire Legal Assistance, offices in Manchester, Claremont, Concord, Littleton, Nashua and Portsmouth, $1,125,000, to support civil legal services legal services n. the work performed by a lawyer for a client.  for low-income and elderly people across New Hampshire.

* Pro Bono Short for pro bono publico [Latin, For the public good]. The designation given to the free legal work done by an attorney for indigent clients and religious, charitable, and other nonprofit entities.  Referral Program, Concord, $210,000, to support civil legal services for people with low-income on matters involving preservation of income and housing, family safety and stability.

* Pro Bono Domestic Violence Emergency Project, Concord, $23,546, to support free, expedited civil legal representation for low-income victims of domestic violence.

* The Support Center at Burch House, Littleton, $5,000, for legal emergency funds for representation of victims of domestic and sexual violence.

* New Hampshire Bar Association's Law-Related Education Program, Concord, $40,000, to support educational programming, available to schools statewide, on the law and the courts.
