Baptist prophets and The Meaning of the Baptist Experience: the Baptist History and Heritage Society views its publication program to be one of its distinctive contributions to the Baptist public.

The BH&HS offers books, booklets, pamphlets, a how-to manual for history programs in churches, and a newsletter and a journal for its embers. For a complete list of available resources, see the Resource Catalog on our website: www.baptisthistory.org.

The BH&HS attempts to relate its history-based publications to issues that have current importance for Baptists. Two such issues focus on the prophetic element in the Baptist story and the meaning of the Baptist experience.

Baptist preachers weekly produce tens of thousands of sermons, and Baptist editors routinely prepare large numbers of editorials. What percentage of such sermons and editorials prophetically address critical issues facing Baptists today--using as plumb lines the Lordship of Christ and the authority of the Bible? Only God knows for sure. Evidence suggests that some preachers and editors need to become more familiar with the prophetic implications of Baptist history and with Baptist prophets themselves.

Baptist identity, meaning, and significance have emerged with increasing force in recent years. Three typical factors causing such questions have included the Moderate-Fundamentalist controversy, post-denominational developments, and secularistic assaults on Baptist ways of approaching life, faith, and church.

Two forthcoming BH&HS publications will focus on the issues just described.

Baptist Prophets: Their Lives and Contributions, a booklet, will be released on November 1, 2006. This educational resource will focus on fourteen representative prophets: Thomas Helwys, John Clarke, William Carey, John Leland, Johann Gerhard Oncken

"We must not, dare not be indifferent to the heritage of mighty names and vital principles that have come down to us," claimed George W. Truett in his presidential address to the 1939 Baptist World Congress in Atlanta, Georgia. So it is not an accident that the BH&HS produces resources that tie together past, present, and future. We are intentionally committed to learning history's lessons.
