Sitagliptin is a member of a potentially new class of oral drugs (DPP-4 inhibitors) that enhances the body's ability to lower blood sugar when it is elevated. In controlled international clinical development studies, sitagliptin demonstrated substantial reduction in blood sugar. The mechanism of DPP-4 inhibitors is distinct from that of any currently available class of glucose lowering agents. Banyu was in charge of phase II clinical trial Noun 1. phase II clinical trial - a clinical trial on more persons than in phase I; intended to evaluate the efficacy of a treatment for the condition it is intended to treat; possible side effects are monitored phase II and from phase III Noun 1. phase III - a large clinical trial of a treatment or drug that in phase I and phase II has been shown to be efficacious with tolerable side effects; after successful conclusion of these clinical trials it will receive formal approval from the FDA onward, sitagliptin will be jointly developed by Banyu and Ono.
