Banyu Pharmaceutical Announces Subanalysis of J-LIT, Large-scale Clinical Trials of Anti-hyperlipidemic Agent LIPOVAS.

Tokyo, Japan, June 26, 2006 - (JCN) - Banyu Pharmaceutical recently published the results of the Japan Lipid Intervention Trial (J-LIT J-LIT Japan Lipid Intervention Trial (study of effect of statins drug on LDL cholesterol) ), large-scale clinical trials of LIPOVAS, its proprietary anti-hyperlipidemic agent, in Circulation Journal (Vol.70, No.7), an academic and professional publication of the Japanese Circulation Society.

In the article, the company presents the results from the subanalysis of J-LIT, showing that the incidence of coronary events was lower in female subjects than male subjects.

Further, the risk of coronary events increased as the LDL-C LDL-C low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol  level was elevated by 10mg/dL. In addition, diabetes contributed to increased risk of coronary events in female subjects.

LIPOVAS (simvastatin simvastatin /sim·va·stat·in/ (sim´vah-stat?in) an antihyperlipidemic agent that acts by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis, used in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and other forms of dyslipidemia and to lower the risks associated ) is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor co-developed by Merck & Co., Inc. and Banyu.

J-LIT, which covers approximately 50,000 hyperlipidemia hyperlipidemia /hy·per·lip·id·emia/ (-lip?i-de´me-ah) elevated concentrations of any or all of the lipids in the plasma, including hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, etc.  patients in Japan, is designed to examine the correlations among the administration of simvastatin, serum lipid levels, and risk of ischemic Ischemic
