Banyan Systems ships Vines 6.0 Release 10, adds multiple features and enhancements.


WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 1995--Banyan Systems today shipped VINES 6.0 Release 10, an update release that provides numerous enhancements and other features for improved network performance and management, and TCP/IP TCP/IP

VINES 6.0 Release 10 is available at no cost to Banyan V.I.P Plan customers and can be used to update all VINES servers on the network electronically. Key features include:

- Support for more than 16 Mbytes of memory on ISA-bus servers to improve overall performance and system capabilities.

- Support for the Banyan Enterprise Client for TCP/IP. This gives users greater flexibility in configuring network connections by allowing DOS or Windows clients to establish TCP/IP sessions to a VINES server.

- Network discovery capability through SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  Server Agent support for VINES IP. When used in conjunction with Outlook, Banyan's SNMP management console A terminal or workstation used to monitor and control a network. See Microsoft Management Console. , administrators can remotely collect network topology See topology.  data for improved systems management.

- Intelligent drive mapping to reduce unnecessary network traffic and improve network performance by automatically disconnecting idle drives and reconnecting them as needed as needed prn. See prn order. .

- Added flexibility for installing server software by creating installation tapes from VINES CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

- PC Dial-in that is now supported from within Windows Enhanced mode through support for standard Microsoft Virtual Communications Drivers. This allows users to start PC Dial-in when in Windows, and to establish separate dial-in connections.

In addition, VINES access software for Metromail Corporation's National Directory Assistance (NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) An agreement signed between two parties that have to disclose confidential information to each other in order to do business. In general, the NDA states why the information is being divulged and stipulates that it cannot be used for any ) is included in the VINES 6.0 Release 10 package. NDA allows users to quickly and easily access, view and save residential and business telephone listings from their PC, reducing telephone directory assistance costs and simplifying the gathering of telemarketing data or verifying billing data.

VINES 6.0 Release 10 can be installed in a modular fashion giving customers maximum flexibility in deploying this release.
