TORONTO -- Following a three-year court fight, the Canadian Union of Public Employees The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE, French: Syndicat canadien de la fonction publique) is a Canadian trade union serving the public sector - although it has in recent years organized workplaces in the non-profit and para-public sector as well.  has won back collective agreement rights lost when the Royal Crest Nursing Homes and Retirement Homes were transferred to a Trustee following bankruptcy bankruptcy, in law, settlement of the liabilities of a person or organization wholly or partially unable to meet financial obligations. The multi-million dollar settlement was approved by the Court and 500 long-term care long-term care (LTC),
n the provision of medical, social, and personal care services on a recurring or continuing basis to persons with chronic physical or mental disorders.
workers at Royal Crest regained increases, benefits and pension plan contributions and entitlements for workers whose rights were terminated.

Jim Flynn, CUPE CUPE Canadian Union of Public Employees  National Representative and long-term care coordinator says the decision will bring these workers' wages "in line with other privately-owned homes in Ontario."

Future wage increases will also be tied to negotiated settlements with another chain of homes, Extendicare, where CUPE has contracts with eight nursing and retirement homes.
