Bank Ukraina, Kiev, becomes the first bank in the CIS to go live with MTi's Abraxsys system.

Management Technologies Inc. (MTi) announced that Bank Ukraina in Kiev has become the first bank in the CIS to go live with its Abraxsys universal banking system.

MTi is now likely to realize $5m of prospective orders from other banks which have been monitoring the project closely with a view to implementing Abraxsys themselves.

Abraxsys was implemented as part of a major overhaul of Bank Ukraina's IT systems in response to the opening up of the Ukrainian economy to foreign trade. All Abraxsys modules throughout the bank's International Division are now running smoothly.

Not only is the bank now superbly equipped to face its competitive future, but the successful implementation of Abraxsys will also spark off a domino effect in the region as other banks rush to follow suit. Abraxsys' ability to support CIS banking requirements makes it a market leader in Ukraine and other parts of the former USSR. Adaptation of the software to meet the particular requirements of the CIS banks has been extensive, including full translation of all screens, help and error text and documentation into Russian using the Cyrillic character set. Specifically for banks in the Ukraine, MTi has implemented several Abraxsys enhancements, including an interface with National Bank of Ukraine's clearing system.

Bank Ukraina showed great foresight in selecting MTi as its technology partner more than two years ago to develop into International Division. This was established in 1992 with four people and has subsequently been so successful that it now employs over 300.

The implementation of Abrxsys has been a driving force behind the transformation of Bank Ukraina into a modern business equipped with the latest Western-style systems. The bank evaluated several systems alongside Abraxsys, but was disappointed with the other contenders, which were unable to meet the tough requirements of the bank during its modernization period.

"One of several deciding factors which drew Bank Ukraina to Abraxsys was the chart of accounts processing, which overcame one of our difficulties in operating internationally," commented Dr. Igor Frantskevich, deputy chairman and head of the International Division at Bank Ukraina. "In the West, banks are relatively free to choose for themselves the format of their chart of accounts, whereas in the CIS the format is more strictly enforced by the Central Bank.

"Generally, outward-looking banks want to use Western systems, and need systems which can simultaneously analyse accounting transactions from two different viewpoints: one chart of accounts format complying with the Central Bank and one consistent with international standards. Abraxsys was the only system evaluated which met this requirement."

There are also longer term benefits to Bank Ukraina of using the Abraxsys solution, most notably its ability to integrate different functions across the bank on the same platform. The initial implementation of Abraxsys to handle Treasury transactions was quickly followed by the addition of Loans Processing, Trade Finance and Domestic and International Payment Processing functionality. Abraxsys also offers the option of automating Bank Ukraina's domestic retail branches. It avoids the need to run these disparate business areas on separate systems and hardware, thereby minimizing cost and enhancing operational efficiency.

Bank Ukraina's head office implementations will be followed by the roll-out of Abraxsys to the bank's 25 regional offices, which in turn control its 650 branches.

Working closely with management consultants from Deloitte/IDOM, MTi dedicated a team of specialist banking consultants and technology experts to the completion of the implementation. Bank Ukraina will benefit from ongoing support of the system including 24-hour on-line support and electronic links between the bank's systems and MTi's UK-based International Support Center. In addition, MTi's recent agreement with Deloitte/IDOM will mean that first-line support will be local, provided by Deloitte/IDOM through its office in Kiev. -0-
