Bangor Hydro seeks emergency rate increase.BANGOR, Maine--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1997-- Bangor Hydro has filed with the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC MPUC Maine Public Utilities Commission MPUC Minnesota Public Utilities Commission MPUC Mission Planning Users Conference ) a request for an emergency increase in rates. Bangor Hydro had previously notified the MPUC that it was filing for a general increase in rates. Under its normal procedures, the MPUC will have nine months to process that case when it is filed in May. The emergency request seeks to implement a rate increase sooner than that. These actions are prompted by the impact on Bangor Hydro's financial condition of the ongoing outage out·age n. 1. A quantity or portion of something lacking after delivery or storage. 2. Bangor Hydro is seeking an emergency adjustment sufficient to produce an additional $ 10 million on an annual basis. If allowed, this would amount to an overall increase in customer rates of approximately 7%. The impact on any given class of customer rates would vary, but if that percentage were applied to the normal residential rate, it would amount to an increase of $5.00 per month in a typical (500 kilowatt hour Kil´o`watt` hour 1. Bangor Hydro has asked the MPUC to rule on the emergency request by June 1, 1997. Whatever amount might be allowed by the MPUC in this emergency request would be taken into account in its final decision in the main case. If granted, this rate increase would be the first rate increase of any kind for Bangor Hydro since early 1994. As a result of aggressive measures taken by Bangor Hydro to decrease its costs and increase its sales, its rates on average have been declining since 1992.
