Bangor Hydro owns a 50% interest in Bangor Gas, which is a joint venture with a subsidiary of Sempra Energy Sempra Energy NYSE: SRE is a San Diego, California-based energy services holding company that was founded in 1998. Sempra owns the Southern California Gas Company, San Diego Gas & Electric, Sempra Commodities, and Sempra Generation. . Sempra, through other subsidiaries, is the largest operator of gas distribution systems in the U.S. Bangor Hydro and Sempra formed Bangor Gas in 1997 to develop a natural gas distribution system in Bangor and neighboring communities. Gas service in the Bangor area has become feasible for the first time because of development of the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline Project, which will tap gas fields off the coast of Nova Scotia Nova Scotia (nō`və skō`shə) [Lat.,=new Scotland], province (2001 pop. 908,007), 21,425 sq mi (55,491 sq km), E Canada.
