BUSINESS chiefs called on the Government to extend the banger bonus yesterday as car makers revealed a boost in production.

The end date for the scheme has already been pushed back to February but the CBI says it should run wants it to run until the general election.

The group's direct general Richard Lambert said: "The scheme has had a big impact."

His comments were echoed by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders which announced UK car plants made 106,400 motors in October. Although output was down 6.7% on last October, it compares to a 59% slump in February.
