CST Central Standard Time

Noun 1.
for VB, a cryptography toolkit for Visual Basic developers.

CST for VB, the latest version of the world class CST product, has been specially designed for Visual Basic applications. Its powerful, rich set of cryptographic components enable developers to build strong information security systems facilitating secure data transmission, data storage/retrieval, encrypted email and secure communication.

Cryptography is essential for software developers wishing to add confidentiality, authentication, and validation to any form of data. As Visual Basic is one of the most popular programming languages a unique requirement exists for a toolkit that provides cryptographic functionality and can be called by not only VB but any language that can call a DLL (1) See data link layer.

(2) (Dynamic Link Library) An executable program module in Windows that performs one or more functions at runtime. DLLs are not launched by the user; they are called for by an executable program or by other DLLs.

Fran Rooney grew up in Ringsend and started his career in the Irish Government sector with various roles in the Postal, Telecoms and Civil Aviation sectors.
, Managing Director of Baltimore Technologies, commented, "Baltimore Technologies are pleased to be first in addressing the security requirements of Visual Basic programmers. Our CST for VB offers unparalleled variety and performance for any cryptographic application enabling developers to build strong information security systems using Visual Basic."

CST for VB contains implementations of the most popular and trusted cryptographic algorithms (RSA (1) (Rural Service Area) See MSA.

(2) (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) A highly secure cryptography method by RSA Security, Inc., Bedford, MA (www.rsa.com), a division of EMC Corporation since 2006. It uses a two-part key.
, DSA (1) (Directory Server Agent) An X.500 program that looks up the address of a recipient in a Directory Information Base (DIB), also known as white pages. It accepts requests from the Directory User Agent (DUA) counterpart in the workstation. , DES, Triple DES, IDEA etc.). These are accessed through an Application Programmer's Interface (API) which is based on Microsoft's well-known Crypto API (CAPI 1. CAPI - Calendar Application Programming Interface.
2. (cryptography) CAPI - Cryptographic Application Programming Interface.
3. (networking) CAPI - Common ISDN Application Programming Interface.
), enabling developers to include cryptographic functions in their applications in a straightforward and consistent manner.

It also provides access to a range of powerful pseudo-random number generators. RSA keys can be up to 2048 bits in length, and DSA keys can be any length up to the 1024 bit maximum length specified in the standard.

CST for VB is provided as a DLL originally written in C so programmers can combine the speed and power of C with the ease of development of VB to add full cryptographic functionality to VB applications in a few minutes.

CST for VB is currently being used by organisations worldwide to satisfy specific security applications.

"An integral part of a customer project necessitated easy to use yet strong cryptography that could be implemented in a Visual Basic environment," commented Brian Caulfield, Managing Director of Peregrine Systems Ltd. "Following detailed evaluation of Baltimore's CST product range, we found their products to be world class and their CST for VB fully satisfied our security requirements."
