engineers are threatening industrial action in the run-up to Christmas in a row over pensions.

The GMB GMB (in Britain) General, Municipal and Boilermakers (Trade Union)  union will hold a strike ballot in protest at company plans to close the final salary pension scheme to new members.

National officer Brian Strutton said: "Keeping in mind that the weather forecasters say the winter is going to be extremely cold, we need to get this sorted out soon."

But British Gas spokesman Dave Kendle said: "Industrial action would be unwarranted and pointless.

"This is about securing the long-term viability of the final salary scheme."

An unofficial GMB ballot shows support for industrial action.

A result of the official vote by the union's 5,500 members is expected on November 25.
