Ballot check; In Bay State contests, voters say `no' to change.

COLUMN: IN OUR OPINION

While Massachusetts residents voted by a strong margin for change in the White House, they cast an even more emphatic vote for the status quo [Latin, The existing state of things at any given date.] Status quo ante bellum means the state of things before the war. The status quo to be preserved by a preliminary injunction is the last actual, peaceable, uncontested status which preceded the pending controversy.  at the Statehouse state·house also state house

and the state's Democratic leanings carried the day.

Thus, Democrat Rep. James B. Eldridge, a legislative "incumbent" of sorts, prevailed in the Middlesex & Worcester Senate District, and Democrat Michael O. Moore prevailed in the 2nd Worcester Senate District.

In short, the next Legislature will look like the current one-party body, only more so.

Several of Tuesday's state election results warrant comment:

Voters rejected a call to eliminate the income tax by a 70-30 margin, up from 55-45 in 2002. With the national economy in turmoil, voters properly concluded that wreaking havoc on state and local budgets was too high a price to pay to send a message to legislative tax-and-spenders.

In the 2nd Worcester Senate District, Michael O. Moore successfully overcame voters' concerns that he might be too closely linked to Sheriff Guy Glodis' political machine.

The 13th Worcester District re-elected Rep. Robert P. Spellane, despite his financial and mortgage problems, but the show of support was tepid tep·id
