Ballet Long Island.


Under the artistic direction of founder Debra Punzi, Balle, Long Island promotes a "classical and contemporary repertoire." Yet the program at the Merce Cunningham Studio (May 16-19, 1996) had little to do with traditional classicism classicism, a term that, when applied generally, means clearness, elegance, symmetry, and repose produced by attention to traditional forms. , are emblematic of the company style. Punzi's Endo Piagh set the pace for selecting a daily-life setting, throwing in a few steps from the ballet lexicon and revving up the mix with lots of energy. Adding sex to the blend, Purzi had five women strip down from sports clothes to lingerie in Suburban Mall Women. While it was unclear why the women shed their outer garments the effect was trite rather than shocking.

Although Walt Whitman was not credited in the program, his "Song of Myself" gave both title and text to Punzi's most serious work, which became a voyage of homoerotic ho·mo·e·rot·ic
