Each of the 100 scientists--from Anaximander, the father of astronomy, to Tim Berners-Lee (person) Tim Berners-Lee - The man who invented the World-Wide Web while working at the Center for European Particle Research (CERN). Now Director of the World-Wide Web Consortium.

Tim Berners-Lee graduated from the Queen's College at Oxford University, England, 1976.
, the creator of the World Wide Web--is given a two-page chapter. Chronological information and additional achievements are presented as insets. The majority of each chapter describes landmark scientific contributions and discoveries. The table of contents reflects the chronological ordering of the book in an easily understood way (e.g., The Ancients, The First Millennium, The Fifteenth Century). Balchin does a good job of contextualizing the work of each scientist within his or her particular cultural and social milieu. Illustrations of certain concepts or devices would have added more clarity to textual descriptions (e.g., the Archimedes screw See under Archimedes, Compound, Foot, etc.

).

An A-Z index of scientists is included, though additional indexing by theories, laws, and subjects would have been useful. The criterion for selecting these scientists as the most essential is absent. 100 Essential Scientists is an accessible work for casual browsing or to locate interesting topics for further research.
