Balancing two worlds.


AS AN AFRO-LATINA PROFESSIONAL IN MY THIRTIES, I can not thank you enough for the cover story of your February 2004 issue, "The Afro-Latino Connection." All of my life I have had to balance two different worlds, my Latina (Dominican) world, which consists solely of family members and their friends, and the African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  world, which consists of my friends, peers, and business relations.

As a black Latina who was born and raised, and still lives and owns a successful real estate business (Phat phat

, I have never been made to feel comfortable or accepted by fellow Latinos, and so most of my friends and acquaintances are African American. I had not heard the term Afro-Latino and, frankly, I am not surprised. Reticence ret·i·cence

 on the part of Latinos to admit their African roots is a shame. It is good to know that those who, like me, grew up conflicted, no longer have to choose.
