He has been on the Harvard faculty since 1984 after spending 16 years on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University Carnegie Mellon University, at Pittsburgh, Pa.; est. 1967 through the merger of the Carnegie Institute of Technology (founded 1900, opened 1905) and the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research (founded 1913).  where he served as Dean of the Graduate School of Industrial Administration. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 articles and nine books.
