Balance brings out the best in Lions.

Yet, ask the coach from either team about the district favorite this season and talk turns to ... Cottage Grove Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. There is farming (cattle, sheep, corn, and soybeans) and manufacturing (chemicals and machinery). ?

"I was a little surprised by that myself," Lions coach Vern Stewart said. "But then, everything has become more even."

It certainly appears that way on paper, as the Tigers graduated 12 players from last season's squad, including four first-team all-league members, while the Spartans also lost a pair of first-teamers, including 3A player of the year Drew Macha.

Thus, Cottage Grove, which has been to the playoffs only once in school history, is suddenly an attractive choice to win its first league title.

"Cottage Grove is well-coached and it's their time to rise to the top," Junction City coach Chris Bolton said.

So far, the Lions haven't disappointed.

They go into today's league opener against Pleasant Hill with a 4-1 record, their only loss coming against Class 4A Springfield.

"We're a pretty even-balanced team," Stewart said. "We've got some stars, but they're willing to give up the ball for the team."

Senior midfielder/defender Josh Chappelle controls the flow of the game for Cottage Grove, while junior midfielder Jaime Urenda is the team's leading scorer with nine goals this season. Those two, along with senior striker Saul Lopez, all played supporting roles supporting role nsecond rôle m

"I like the communication we have with each other and a team unity we haven't had in the past," said Stewart, whose team was 2-4-2 in league play last season.

"It'll definitely be a tight race this year. And we don't want to finish third."

 for too long.

While the Tigers (2-1-2) may not bring back experience, they certainly aren't young, with a roster of eight seniors, six juniors and two sophomores. Six of those players saw action in Junction City's state semifinal game last season, including midfielder J.J. McCool and striker Allen Bair.

"We've got a lot of playoff experience, but not a lot of time playing together," Bolton said. "We don't have a lot of guys who were counted on to make a difference."

They'll be tested right away, as the Tigers and Spartans open against each other today at 4:30 p.m. in Junction City.

"If we can get over that hump hump (hump) a rounded eminence.

, we'll breathe a lot deeper," Bolton said,

Marist coach Tom Coffin undoubtedly agrees.

The Spartans (0-5) have struggled through a difficult nonleague season that has exposed Marist's offensive shortcomings A shortcoming is a character flaw.

In five games, the Spartans have been shut out three times, and scored only one goal in each of the other two.

"We have to find a way to manufacture goals," Coffin said. "We have to put more adrenaline adrenaline (ədrĕn`əlĭn, –lēn): see epinephrine.  into our offense."

Defensively, Marist is as good as anybody in the district - and probably the state - with the return of first-team all-league goalkeeper Scott Macha and first-team all-league defender Conall Cary.

"We need to remain very strong defensively because we will rebuild from the back," said Coffin, whose team advanced to the state quarterfinals last season before losing to state runner-up La Salle La Salle, city (1990 pop. 9,717), La Salle co., N Ill., on the Illinois River; settled 1830, inc. 1852. It forms a tricity unit with Peru and Oglesby. Corn, wheat, and soybeans are grown, and cattle and hogs are raised.  2-0.

One other team expected to threaten for the title is Sisters, the third team from the district to make the playoffs last season.

The Bulldogs have started out 4-0 and have outscored their opponents 24-2.

North Bend lost in the first round of the playoffs last season, falling 1-0 to Estacada in a game decided in overtime with penalty kicks.

Brookings (4-1), currently the only other team in the district with a winning record, also looks improved from last season when it finished in third place behind Sutherlin, which has since merged its program with Oakland.
