Baker Donelson Law Firm announces formation of Environmental Section.


MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 27, 1995--Baker, Donelson, Bearman & Caldwell today announced the formation of its Environmental Group.

Baker Donelson, with 205 attorneys, is Tennessee's largest law firm, and one of the 150 largest firms in the United States. The Environmental Group is comprised primarily of 15 lawyers who practice exclusively or predominately in the area of environmental law environmental law n. a body of state and federal statutes intended to protect the environment, wildlife, land, beauty, prevent pollution, over-cutting of forests, save endangered species, conserve water, develop and follow general plans and prevent damaging practices. These laws often give individuals and groups the right to bring legal actions or seek court orders to enforce the protections or demand revisions of private and public activity which may, and has recently been joined by John R. Barker, a former EPA Regional Counsel and Department of Justice Senior Trial Counsel. The attorneys are located in each of Baker Donelson's Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville and Johnson City offices, as well as in Washington, D.C.

Baker Donelson resulted from the November 1994 combination of former Senator Howard Baker, Jr.'s Knoxville-based Baker, Worthington, Crossley & Stansberry with Memphis-based Heiskell, Donelson, Bearman, Adams, Williams & Caldwell. The combination brought together Heiskell Donelson's strong transactional and litigation practice with Baker Worthington's extensive litigation, lobbying, and international expertise. Both firms had significant environmental practices prior to the combination.

The Environmental Group will be headed by Gary C. Shockley of Baker Donelson's Nashville office. Shockley is President-elect of the Tennessee Bar Association Environmental Law Section.

Ben C.
