Want to bid on some sweet stuff?

On Tuesday, (15th), the Los Angeles Unified School District is auctioning off 1,540 cases of leftover cake and brownie mix as part of its program to purge unhealthy foods for students' diets. The sugary concoctions are among the first to go on the block as part of an obesity prevention program that became effective for the district's students on July 1, 2004.

The auction will take place at the district's procurement center in Pico Rivera. There's no minimum bid. "Instead of throwing it away in the trash can, we've opted to bid this out," said LAUSD Spokeswoman Ellen Morgan.

In 2003, the district's school board passed the Childhood Obesity Prevention Motion, which institutes fat intake, portion size and other nutritional guidelines for foods served to students for breakfast and lunch.

Among the requirements are that foods should not have more than 10 percent of total calories from saturated and trans fat and that pastries, muffins and other bakery items be served in 3-ounce portions.

District officials said they expected bids from food supply companies, rather than individuals. But for those with a major sweet tooth, this might do the trick: One case equals six 5-pound bags of cake mix or six 6-pound bags of brownie mix.
