BakBone Appoints Douglas Spencer as VP R&D and Fabrice Helliker as CTO; Collaboration to Sharpen BakBone's Next-Generation Technology Vision and Strategy.

SAN DIEGO -- BakBone Software, Inc. (TSX:BKB)(OTCBB:BKBOF), a global provider of data protection software, announced today that it has appointed Douglas Spencer to the position of vice president of research and development. Spencer succeeds Fabrice Helliker, who has been appointed to the newly created position of chief technology officer, effective immediately. Reporting directly to Jim Johnson, president and CEO, Helliker and Spencer will work collaboratively to maximize BakBone's evolving vision of matching its technical expertise with software research and product innovation.

With over 23 years of experience in the software industry in product and international business development, Spencer brings a new dimension to BakBone's research and development effort. Having spent the last year as an executive technology consultant to the investment community and small technology companies, Spencer will now fully assume the role of managing the day-to-day operations of product development at BakBone, including design, production and maintenance. As vice president of research and development, Spencer will also be responsible for the software development and quality control teams to deliver leading-edge products to BakBone's numerous strategic and alliance partners, as well as end-users.

In the newly created position of chief technology officer, Helliker, who has been with BakBone since its inception and was intimately involved in the engineering re-architecture of the NetVault product in the mid-1990s, will be responsible for driving BakBone's product strategy. He will also assume a major role in directing the evolution and advancement of BakBone's data protection capabilities and developing a portfolio of market-driven technologies to strengthen BakBone's competitive position in the industry.

Prior to joining BakBone, Spencer was the senior vice president of development for SoftBrands Hospitality, leading a team of over 130 people in six countries. In addition, Spencer held senior management positions with Intergraph Corporation, Compuware Corporation, Trilogy Software and smaller startup companies, specifically in product development, business development and merger integration. Spencer holds a BA in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee and an MBA focused on marketing and general management from the Culverhouse School of Business, University of Alabama, as well as a US patent pending in adaptive Internet content filtering.

As the vice president of engineering since March 2000, Helliker joined BakBone (previously known as NetVault Limited) in 1992 to support the existing backup products and to aid in the development efforts with AT&T Bell Labs for NetVault. During the mid-1990s, Helliker managed the development team through several major revisions of NetVault, and also led the engineering re-architecture of NetVault, including the design of the flexible development methods in use today for the product's modular structure. Prior to joining BakBone, Helliker held engineering positions at Seimens Plessey. Helliker received his BSc with honors in computer science from Brighton University, Brighton, UK.
