In August 1940, at the height of the Battle of Britain Battle of Britain, in World War II, series of air battles between Great Britain and Germany, fought over Britain from Aug. to Oct., 1940. As a prelude to a planned invasion of England, Germany attacked British coastal defenses, radar stations, and shipping.  German Luftwaffe at bay. Bailey enlisted in the RAF at the beginning of WW II and became a fighter pilot. He first saw action in the Battle of Britain and saw further combat in the Mediterranean, Italy, and finally in the Allied invasion of the south of France South of France south n the South of France → le Sud de la France, le Midi  near the end of the war. In a realistic, matter-of-fact manner, Bailey discusses the day-to-day activities of pilots and crews, describes their training, and provides exciting accounts of the air battles.

Seed captures the chilly somber tone of a tired veteran flier who has seen too much of war and killing. His reserved, middleclass accent reflects the typical unemotional quality of British speech.
