Baggies star Lee nets a hat-trick and baby Mia.

West Bromwich Albion striker Lee Hughes was celebrating after becoming a father.

Smethwick-born Hughes, a former roofer, and his air hostess wife Annamarie became proud parents when she gave birth to a girl, Mia, at Redditch's Alexandra Hospital.

Baby Mia weighed in at a healthy 6lb 7oz and both mother and daughter were doing fine yesterday at the family's new home in Bromsgrove.

Hughes, aged 24, married 28-year-old Annamarie, whose father is Croatian, in a hush-hush ceremony in the former Yugoslav republic in June.

He declined to comment on the new arrival but his father Bill, of The Oval, Smethwick, said: 'What a fantastic weekend - Lee scored a hat-trick against Gillingham at the Hawthorns on Saturday, Annamarie was taken into hospital on Sunday, and she had the baby on Monday afternoon.
