Baggies may go for Sol.

Byline: Chris Lepkowski

ALBION have tested the water over a potential move for Sol Campbell Sulzeer Jeremiah "Sol" Campbell (born 18 September 1974 in Plaistow, London) is an English footballer. He is a defender for the English national team and is captain of Portsmouth in the English Premiership, having previously played for Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal. .

The club have held exploratory talks with the 35-year-old's agent following his decision to leave Notts County.

Reports today claimed Campbell had held talks with Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo Roberto Di Matteo (born May 29, 1970 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland) is a Swiss-Italian former professional footballer. A midfielder, his career consisted of spells at Schaffhausen (1988-91), Zürich (1991-92), Aarau (1992-93), Lazio (1993-96), and Chelsea (1996-2002).  and was set to undergo a medical.

Those are somewhat premature, although Albion have asked to be kept in the loop should he become available.

Campbell is still technically registered with County, which makes him unavailable to join anyone until January although he is hoping for special dispensation DISPENSATION. A relaxation of law for the benefit or advantage of an individual. In the United States, no power exists, except in the legislature, to dispense with law, and then it is not so much a dispensation as a change of the law.  to enable him to resume his career earlier. There are several hurdles Albion would need to negotiate first, not least his lack of match fitness.

Campbell, who figured just once for County before walking out, was also reportedly earning in excess of pounds 40,000 a week at Meadow Lane, as part of a five-year package.

Such figures would put Albion way out of reach, although he could decide to lower his demands.
