One of the most exciting versions of triple draw poker is Badugi, which is a draw poker lowball game that uses traditional betting structures with a twist. Badugi can be a frustrating game to learn due to the ranking of Badugi hands that differ from the triple draw lowball poker games that you might have played before. Once you learn the ins and outs of playing Badugi and have developed a sound strategy for Badugi poker, however, you will find that Badugi is fun and can be quite profitable for those poker players who take it seriously. Let?s have a look at some of the strategies that the best Badugi poker enthusiasts and pro players offer for beginning Badugi players.

Know the Badugi Rules

Have a well-rounded knowledge of Badugi poker rules and guidelines prior to putting any money on the table. Those players who know the rules of Badugi inside and out are those that can really work their game to be its most profitable. Although many of the rules that guide the game of Badugi poker are very much like those that are used for triple draw poker, there are many game-specific Badugi rules that are individually unique to the Badugi game. For instance, a Badugi hand is made of only four cards. This is a called a ?Badugi?. The best combination of Badugi cards for the Badugi hand is the ace ? two ? three ? and four cards in different and separate suits. This is just one of the major twists in Badugi that must be learned before you can be a knowledgeable Badugi player.

Calculating Your Badugi Hand

It is virtually impossible to build an awesome Badugi hand without knowing how to calculate Badugi hand values and knowing what makes a stronger Badugi hand. An easy and proven method to learn how to value your Badugi hand is to convert the cards that you hold into a numeric value. For an example, let?s assume that player one is holding the best hand possible in Badugi, which is the ace ?two ? three- and four combination. Player two is holding two ? three ? six and seven. By converting each player?s hand into a numeral, you will find out who is holding the best (worst) Badugi hand. Player one?s hand would convert to the numeral 4,321 and player two?s hand would convert to the numeral 7,632. Because 7,632 is higher than 4,321, then player one is holding the best Badugi hand.

Positioning is Important in Badugi Poker

In all poker games, your position at the table is important to the way that you will play during each round. Badugi poker is no different. You can use your place at the table during each round of play to your advantage, depending upon where you are seated in relation to the dealer chip. Each seat around the table will have advantages and disadvantages, and once you have learned the game well enough, you will easily recognize just how your position relates to the hand being played. For instance, during the rounds of betting, if you are seated in a ?late position?, you have the obvious advantage of knowing more about the hands that your opponents are holding by the mannerisms that they display during play. No matter where you are seated during each hand or round of Badugi poker, use your position to your advantage as best you can.
