"By offering a complete range of meter reading technologies, Badger Meter is in a good position as the utility industry continues to move from manual to automated and automatic meter reading Automatic meter reading, or AMR, is the technology of automatically collecting data from water meter or energy metering devices (water, gas, electric) and transferring that data to a central database for billing and/or analyzing.  systems," Forbes noted.

The gain in earnings for 1996 was due to the higher sales and an increase in the profit margin from 36.0% for 1995 to 36.7% in 1996. Forbes said the higher profit margin reflected improved pricing and lower manufacturing costs resulting from the company's ongoing cost improvement programs. Interest expense was reduced from $721,000 in 1995 to $368,000 in 1996, as cash generated by operations was used to reduce debt and interest rates were lower in 1996 than in 1995.
