Badge of honour for homes.


THE country's first council homes for the elderly have had their place in history confirmed by commemorative blue plaques.

Redcar and Cleveland The borough of Redcar & Cleveland is a unitary authority in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England consisting of Redcar, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Guisborough, and small towns such as Brotton, Skelton and Loftus.  Council recently announced that several landmarks across the borough would be recognised. The plaques are intended to help residents and visitors appreciate their heritage and history.

And among the buildings now carrying their blue badge of honour are 20 bungalows in Dorman's Crescent, Dormanstown. When built in 1931, the bungalows were the first local authority homes for the elderly in England and Wales England and Wales are both constituent countries of the United Kingdom, that together share a single legal system: English law. Legislatively, England and Wales are treated as a single unit (see State (law)) for the conflict of laws. . They were transferred from council ownership to Coast & Country Housing in 2002.

The firm's chief executive, Iain Sim, said: "These bungalows demonstrate that our region has forged a reputation for innovative social housing." They had been modernised and stood the test of time, he said. Alexander James Beck
