Bad news.DUBLIN, Ireland -- A long-awaited and brutally comprehensive study of decades of child abuse and neglect within Ireland's church-run network of reformatories, workhouses, orphanages, and other institutions was released on May 20. The 2,600-page report detailed thousands of horrific stories of rape and abuse of Irish children consigned to church institutions from the 1930s through the 1990s, offering vindication to hundreds of now-adult survivors. The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse devoted nine years to its investigation, delayed by church lawsuits, missing documentation, and alleged government obstruction. |
