Awareness of the geographical distribution of multiple sclerosis makes the Epstein-Barr virus Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), herpesvirus that is the major cause of infectious mononucleosis and is associated with a number of cancers, particularly lymphomas in immunosuppressed persons, including persons with AIDS.  an unlikely agent ("Virus shapes risk of multiple sclerosis," SN: 1/5/02, p. 4). Multiple sclerosis is most common in the white population of northern Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. . The risk of developing the disease in white populations increases with latitude. In Uganda, multiple sclerosis is rarely seen, while the Epstein-Barr virus is ubiquitous and high antibody levels may be predictive of Burkitt's lymphoma Bur·kitt's lymphoma
