The mystery behind a "eucharistic miracle" that had been reported at St. James Catholic Church in Dallas has apparently been solved. In March, after word spread that a bleeding host had been found at the church, St. James put the alleged miracle on display. A month earlier, a young boy had choked on the host and had spit it out. According to church rules about the proper disposal of a host, it was placed in a glass of water to dissolve, but was then forgotten. When a church worker later found it, it had turned red.

The Diocese of Dallas took possession of the glass with the host and sent it to the University of Dallas' biology department for analysis. The conclusion, according to a letter by Dallas Bishop Charles Grahmann, was "that the object is a combination of fungal mycelia and bacterial colonies that have been incubated within the aquatic environment of the glass during the four-week period in which it was stored in the open air.
