Backlog Grows for Intevac, Inc.'s 200 Lean(R).

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba

, Calif. -- Intevac, Inc. (Company) (Nasdaq:IVAC IVAC Islington Voluntary Action Council (England, UK)

) has received an order for a 200 Lean([R]) magnetic disk sputtering A popular method for adhering thin films onto a substrate. Sputtering is done by bombarding a target material with a charged gas (typically argon) which releases atoms in the target that coats the nearby substrate. It all takes place inside a magnetron vacuum chamber under low pressure.  system scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2007.

Intevac Chief Executive Kevin Fairbairn stated: "We are pleased to receive this order, which is the second order received this year and increases our backlog for shipment in the first half of 2007 to twenty-six 200 Lean systems Lean manufacturing systems are aimed towards attaining the shortest cycle time by eliminating waste. Instead of allotting resources that would be required for future production, lean manufacturing systems focus on decreasing system response time so that the production system is able to , or 30% more than the twenty 200 Leans shipped in the first half of 2006. This system is a replacement for one of our legacy tools, as are a significant number of the systems we are delivering in the first half of 2007."

The 200 Lean is Intevac's latest-generation disk sputtering system that provides significantly enhanced capabilities relative to the installed base of Intevac([R]) MDP-250 systems. The 200 Lean provides higher throughput from a smaller footprint, which enables more magnetic disks to be manufactured per square foot of factory floor space, and is designed to reduce overall cost of ownership. The 200 Lean's flexible and modular design In the context of systems engineering, modular design — or "modularity in design" — is an approach aiming to subdivide a system into smaller parts (modules) that can be independently created and then used in different systems to drive multiple functionalities.  accommodates the production of multiple sizes of both aluminum and glass disks, as well as the growing number of thin-film process steps required by the adoption of advanced technologies such as perpendicular recording A method of digital recording on a magnetic disk in which the bits are in a vertical arrangement instead of horizontal in order to take up less space. Also called "vertical recording," perpendicular recording is expected to materialize with areal densities exceeding 200 gigabits per .
