Back to life: what made Lachlan Walters, a 19-year-old apprentice upholsterer from Adelaide, Australia, give up drink and drugs?

I was brought up in a `good Christian household' by parents who didn't quite have all the answers.

When I was eight they taught me how to drink `maturely'. At 13 my cousin taught me about marijuana marijuana or marihuana, drug obtained from the flowering tops, stems, and leaves of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa (see hemp) or C. indica; the latter species can withstand colder climates.  and how to smoke it. After that I progressed to all other drugs both illegal and prescription to the point where at 15 I started injecting amphetamines Amphetamines
Sympathomimetic amines; sometimes called speed; synthetic chemicals that stimulate the central nervous system.

and heroin. These drugs caused huge problems with my health and psychological thoughts. I attempted suicide 12 times, four of which doctors say should have killed me outright. The other eight were attention seeking exercises.

My friends helped by selling me more drugs and teaching me how to take them. Out of the original 16 friends in the `drug group' from 1994, three are still alive, the last one dying three weeks ago. All these deaths were drug-related.

The turning point came when my girlfriend, whom I was rather fond of, left me because she couldn't sit back and watch my life-destroying and destructive behaviour. I realized that I was losing and pushing away the people who loved me.

I took myself to the doctor for the first time in four years and found out the extent of the damage I had done to my kidneys, lungs and stomach. He told me I had to give up alcohol, amphetamines, even caffeine caffeine (kăfēn`), odorless, slightly bitter alkaloid found in coffee, tea, kola nuts (see cola), ilex plants (the source of the Latin American drink maté), and, in small amounts, in cocoa (see cacao).  if I wanted to survive any more than 15 years. So I told my parents, who had mixed reactions but handled it well.

In fact my parents were excellent. They helped me through detoxification Detoxification Definition

Detoxification is one of the more widely used treatments and concepts in alternative medicine. It is based on the principle that illnesses can be caused by the accumulation of toxic substances (toxins) in the body.
, which cleaned out my body from all the drugs. For three weeks I suffered cramps, nightmares, insomnia insomnia, abnormal wakefulness or inability to sleep. The condition may result from illness or physical discomfort, or it may be caused by stimulants such as coffee or drugs. However, frequently some psychological factor, such as worry or tension, is the cause.  and disorientation disorientation /dis·or·i·en·ta·tion/ (-or?e-en-ta´shun) the loss of proper bearings, or a state of mental confusion as to time, place, or identity. . Meanwhile my parents had removed every sharp object from my room. They supported me by `being there' while I had no idea of what was going on.

I then had to live without drugs and alcohol which meant reacting to problems differently and learning how to deal with life. Yet there was still something missing. I had taken out the distractions but still felt empty. My ex-girlfriend was a Buddhist so I decided to look into that. Religion gave me moral precepts and changed my thoughts about life.

I've learnt to deal with my problems by taking time out every day to reflect on the right moral choices I need to make. Only through this quiet time can I make choices that won't hurt other people or myself.

Now I am finding I can help other people with problems.

My father has been on a similar path to mine and found his answers through Christianity. Recently he apologized for his actions of abuse while under the influence of alcohol. The need to apologize a·pol·o·gize

came to him while he was having his quiet time. It was the best and most honest apology that I have ever received, and finally broke the last barrier between my father and myself. It healed the deep hate I had felt for him since I was knee-high to a grasshopper grasshopper, name applied to almost 9,000 different species of singing, jumping insects in two families of the order Orthoptera. Grasshoppers are long, slender, winged insects with powerful hind legs and strong mandibles, or mouthparts, adapted for chewing. .

I have found a new direction in life. I aim to finish my apprenticeship apprenticeship, system of learning a craft or trade from one who is engaged in it and of paying for the instruction by a given number of years of work. The practice was known in ancient Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as in modern Europe and to some extent  and then do some work in India, and learn to give what I can to those around me.
