Back to basics: ballet shoes for every dancer.

Wearing pointe shoes 'Pointe shoes', also referred to as toe shoes, are a special type of shoe used by ballet dancers for pointework. They developed from the desire to appear weightless, and sylph- like onstage and have evolved to allow extended periods of movement on the tips of the toes  in class builds strength, but don't discount the benefits of working in slippers. Flats allow your toes and metatarsals to spread out, which promotes healthy feet. "You can feel your weight pressed into the floor and your arch lifted in first or fifth position more easily in a slipper than in pointe shoes," says Nashville Ballet's Rachel Ellis. "You can press through every part of your tendu ten·du

." If you're returning to class after a break, wearing slippers is helpful. "Coming back from vacation "Back from Vacation" is the eleventh episode of the third season of the US version of The Office. It aired on January 4, 2007, and was the first episode to air after the winter hiatus. , it's nice to start in slippers," says Sara Webb of Houston Ballet. "It reminds me how to perform proper technique. I'm not very stable in pointe shoes after being off for a few weeks." Like pointe shoes, slippers wear out. Leather stretches, canvas snags. When it's time to toss your old pair, take the opportunity to try a new style. Don't want a drawstring on top of your foot? Choose a shoe with one on the side. A pair that incorporates a mesh fabric will keep your feet cool and dry. If you're feeling like you need a real change, opt for a color other than pink! Whatever you need, you'll find it among our favorites (here, with their suggested retail price).
