RETAILERS fear 250 shops will close if they are forced to sell cigarettes under the counter.

The Scottish Government The Scottish Government (SG) (Scottish Gaelic: Riaghaltas na h-Alba) is the executive arm of government of Scotland. It was established in 1999 as the Scottish Executive  want to ban stores from putting tobacco on display.

The Tobacco Retailers Alliance, a pressure group with 2700 members in Scotland, have written to MSPs urging them to reject the SNP SNP Scottish National Party

The Alliance's Katherine Graham said: "We feel that providing better support and encouragement for retailers in upholding the law is a more effective approach than simply criminalising them." The letters are headed as being from "Responsible Retailers" but are partly funded by the Tobacco Manufacturers Association.
