A four-year degree program at Miami-Dade Community College (M-DCC) in Florida will help to address two problems that exist in the state--the teacher shortage and the growing cultural gap between teachers and the children in their classrooms.

A 2001 Florida state legislative act allows community colleges to apply to offer a four-year degree in areas where there is a severe shortage of personnel or where the school is located far from a university. It is estimated that, statewide, more than 16,000 new teachers will be needed each year for the next 10 years; however, public and private colleges and universities in Florida The following is a list of colleges and universities in the U.S. state of Florida. "We are going to change the face of teaching in this country," says Miami-Dade Community College President Dr. Eduardo Padron.

Citing evidence that increasing the proportion of minority teachers to students produces a direct, positive impact on student achievement, Roberts notes, "It is also important for white, non-Hispanic students to encounter minority teachers.
