That means a standard four-hour shift leaves parents forking out pounds 18.96 - more than the cost of two tickets to the movies.

In comparison, paper rounds pay teens an average of only pounds 1.10 an hour, while fast food joints pay pounds 3.60 and supermarkets pounds 4.50.

A shortage of sitters has apparently boosted wages, with four in 10 parents saying they had to ditch plans for a night out because they could not find anyone.

School workloads were cited as a key reason for the shortage of minders.
