Baby that gets full treatment.Byline: By PETER KEENAN Motors Correspondent IT'S attention to detail that makes BMW BMW in full Bayerische Motoren Werke AG German automaker. Founded as an aircraft engine manufacturer in 1916, the company assumed the name Bayerische Motoren Werke and became known for its high-speed motorcycles in the 1920s. one of the world's best car makers. This was highlighted yet again when, stopping at some traffic lights, I dropped the clutch, put the BMW 118d in neutral and the engine conked out. Thinking I'd done something wrong I dropped the clutch again and the engine automatically restarted. I was the beneficiary ofBMW's neat automatic stop/start feature designed to prevent unnecessary pollution and fuel consumption when you are stationary. The 1 Series may be the baby of the BMW range, but it gets the full treatment from the German masters. Continuing the green theme, the 143bhp diesel engine offers impressively low carbon dioxide carbon dioxide, chemical compound, CO2, a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is about one and one-half times as dense as air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure. emissions making it cleaner than many city cars. This in turn earns the 118d a relatively low tax rating - especially when you consider that's a BMW badge slapped on the bonnet. But the rear wheel drive layout does have a drawback as it imposes some important restrictions on interior room - particularly for passengers in the back. The kids could just about squeeze into the rear if my wife and I shunted our seats forward a bit, but I wouldn't want to put adults there for any length of time as limited legroom leg·room n. It gives the range the more sporty option it has been crying out for to attract the younger buyer who doesn't really need the rear seats or masses of luggage room. Its coupe-style frameless doors look cool, but the car's exterior is always going to leave people loving or hating it despite recent revisions that include an enlarged kidney grille on the front, remodelled front spoiler, new light clusters and rear bumper. Up front, without anyone to worry about in rear, there's plenty of head and legroom with a great driving position easy to obtain thanks to a fully adjustable seat and a steering wheel that moves for rake and reach. A good level of safety equipment is fitted as standard to the 118d including six airbags, anti-lock brakes and dynamic stability control.
