A Garda spokesman said the baby "is doing well and in good health".

He added: "The matter is under investigation because we still don't know who the person was.

"For now we're just happy the child has been reunited with her family."

The baby was found at Tara Street Dart station in Dublin at 3.45pm on Thursday.

The girl, aged between 18 months and two years, was discovered by a commuter close to the stairs near the southbound platform.

Iarnrod Eireann staff were alerted and the child was brought to the ticket office. Gardai took the child to Pearse Street station. She was then handed over to the health board, where she is still being cared for.

The child's family was located hours later.

No arrests have so far been made but a file is being prepared for the DPP DPP - Dining Philosophers Problem .

The girl has red curly hair. She was wearing a blue denim dress and jacket with white socks when found.

Ticket officer Val Kealey said the baby appeared to be "well looked after". He added: "She was fast asleep the whole time."

It is thought the child was abandoned by a man who had brought her on a southbound train from Connolly Station.

At Tara Street, it is believed he left the baby at the bottom of a flight of stairs Noun 1. flight of stairs - a stairway (set of steps) between one floor or landing and the next
