This year sees the centenary of the man who began the Jaguar story when he cofounded the Swallow Side Car Company on September 4, 1922, in Blackpool.

The company gradually evolved into Jaguar Cars, which this year opened its pounds 300m X-Type production plant at Halewood's former Ford factory.

Halewood's X-Type will line up in the parade of 65 vintage cars and current Jaguar models, which starts in Blackpool today but calls in to Liverpool on Tuesday on its seven-day rally to Jaguar's current base in Coventry.

A visit to Chester Zoo has been included in the rally the following day to celebrate the opening of The Spirit Of The Jaguar, a Jaguar-sponsored rain forest exhibit and breeding environment for the rare and endangered big cat.

Jaguar Cars boss Jonathan Browning and TV and film actress Stephanie Powers will carry out the official opening.

A Jaguar spokesman said the Halewood visit would be a highlight of the vintage motoring extravaganza.

"Jaguar is delighted to be able to include Merseyside for the first time in this significant celebration of its history which marks a welcome return to the company's birthplace in the North West."
