Babilu helps Newcombe in from cold.

IT MAY have been only a lowly 2m claimer that Babilu battled bravely to collect, but the look of relief on trainer Tony Newcombe's face said plenty.

The Barnstaple trainer had gone 115 days, and 43 runners, since he last saddled a winner, but the well-fancied filly filly

, ridden by apprentice Jack Dean, did not fluff her lines as she held off Hill Of Clare by a length.

Newcombe joked: "I can start buying the Racing Post The Racing Post is a British daily horse racing, greyhound racing and sports betting newspaper. "But seriously, we thought she would get the trip and she handles this soft ground, so we thought she had a real chance, especially as she was pretty well in on the ratings."

Babilu did not return to Newcombe's yard after the race, being claimed by trainer Dai Burchell for pounds 10,000.

Farmers Wish showed plenty of resolution under Frankie McDonald to fight off the attentions of Bridge Valley to take the 6f juvenile maiden. There was a shade over two lengths between the pair at the line.

John Spearing, the winning trainer, said: "I have trained all her family to win. They all handled soft ground, so we had no worries on that count, and her future now lies in nurseries."

The Sean Curran-trained Sagunt galloped on strongly to win the 1m4f amateur riders' handicap and give jockey Faye Bramley the perfect 28th birthday present.

Curran said: "I was worried about the ground as he has won his last two races on a fastish surface, but I walked the course and it was no worse than jumping good to soft, so we decided to run. I'm glad we did."

He said: "She has always had the ability, but she's kept a bit for herself, so we freshened her up after her last run and changed the tactics. It has all paid off and hopefully she can go on from here."
