The five stages of each product lifecycle are product development, introduction, growth, maturity and decline.  management (PLM) solutions for the value chain, today announced that The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W), a global supplier of power generation systems and equipment, has selected MatrixOne solutions in an agreement valued at more than $2.5 million. Chosen for their ability to manage the complexities of highly engineered-to-order products, MatrixOne collaborative PLM solutions are designed to reduce cycle times, achieve greater operational effectiveness, and eliminate project variability.

B&W designs and builds major power generation systems that can require two years or more to complete. Managing such complex projects requires extensive documentation - often more than a million documents for a single project. B&W will deploy MatrixOne solutions to create a secure, online business collaboration environment to help manage its complex, unique, engineered-to-order, multi-million-dollar projects and bring them to completion more quickly at a higher quality and reduced cost.

"B&W supplies innovative solutions to meet the world's growing energy needs," said Penny Sherrod, director of Enterprise Systems for Babcock & Wilcox. "In fact, B&W power generation systems and equipment can be found in more than 800 utilities and industries in more than 90 countries. MatrixOne's collaborative PLM solutions will bring a greater degree of operational effectiveness to our organization, giving us the balance we seek between project control and engineering enablement. The scalability and flexibility of the solution also ensures the implementation will easily grow as our needs expand."

B&W will deploy the eMatrix(R) Global Collaboration Platform An emerging category of computer software, collaboration platforms are unified electronic platforms that support synchronous and asynchronous communication through a variety of devices and channels.  and Value Chain Portfolio(TM) applications. The MatrixOne Team Central(TM) application will provide the collaboration workspace and project management capabilities necessary to realize consistency and greater profitability in delivering power plant projects in which a significant number of variables are introduced by suppliers and third-party groups. The MatrixOne DocuManagement Central(TM) application will support project management by enabling B&W to manage documents including customer specifications, which are legally binding documents in engineered-to-order projects, and formal correspondence between B&W, its suppliers and its customers. The MatrixOne Engineering Central(TM) application is designed to reduce costs and cycle times, while improving quality, by streamlining engineering change processes through B&W's engineering design programs.

"The opportunity to streamline processes and reduce costs in highly complex engineered-to-order projects is immense," said John Fleming
