Babcock & Wilcox Operation Honored for Environmental Improvements.

BARBERTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1998--Ebensburg Power Company (EPC), a partnership between Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) and Ebensburg Investors LP, was honored by the Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) for innovative technological and environmental improvements to the land and waterways at EPC's facility in Cambria Township, Penn.

The EPC mining, reclamation and power generation operation was recognized at the annual IMCC awards banquet, Sept. 22, in Asheville, N.C., with an honorable mention. According to Gregory E. Conrad, IMCC executive director, EPC's efforts "demonstrate the kind of quality and innovation that speaks loudly and clearly of the industry's dedication to the maintenance of environmental protection through efficient mining and reclamation practices."

The Ebensburg/B&W partnership built, owns and operates the facility's cogeneration plant, which features a B&W circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler that burns recovered waste coal to make electricity and generate steam for heat. Reclamation and fuel supply services are provided by B&W's Revloc Reclamation Services Inc.

In its eight years of operation, EPC has succeeded in removing waste coal refuse from the surrounding creek, extinguishing fires from the piles and restoring land with vegetation. By the project's completion, EPC will have reclaimed 86 acres of abandoned refuse pile, hauled away approximately three million tons of acidic coal refuse, eliminated six pollutional discharges, restored five miles of the area's streams, and eliminated a refuse pile fire that was burning for 18 years.

In addition to the commendation by IMCC, EPC also has been recognized with the regional Joseph A. Holmes safety award in 1996 for its commitment to safety and exemplary record of no lost-time accidents, and with the "Plant of the Year" award that same year by the Anthracite Region Independent Power Producers Association for its efficiency and high capacity factor.

IMCC is a multi-state governmental organization representing the natural resource interests of its 18 member states. IMCC established the National Reclamation Awards Program to recognize outstanding achievements in reclamation and to promote reclamation on a national level.
